About Us

Our Story

Riverside Greenway Café, near Newport in Co. Mayo is owned by Helena O’Malley who, after almost 20 years working as an engineer in the corporate world in Dublin, decided to flee the rat race and return to her native county of Mayo.  She renovated a 19th century cottage located just 2 miles outside of Newport town (on the Wild Atlantic Way) and converted it into the recently opened Riverside Café.

Our Vision

The Riverside Café seamlessly combines both old and new.  The décor is traditional with its half-door, wood burning stove, bespoke china tea-sets, and hand knitted tea-cosies.  Meanwhile its menu offers a fresh take on home-made, wholesome food.  “I wanted to offer excellent coffee in a warm and welcoming atmosphere alongside fresh produce, from suppliers such as Achill Island Sea Salt and Kelly’s Butchers of Newport all made here on site by me each morning” says Helena.

You can expect old time favourites like fluffy fruit scones, apple tart or banoffee pie as well as more adventurous choices including orange and almond cake and blueberry and cinnamon slices.  Savoury options include vegetable soup served with homemade pesto and brown soda bread or if you’re looking for something more substantial there’s savoury pancakes with marina sauce or Italian beef stew.  Gluten free choices are also available on our menu.

Looking Forward to Seeing You

Whether you’re living in the area, or cycling on The Great Western Greenway, Riverside Café is the perfect excuse to stop off and treat yourself to some new, old-fashioned home cooking.

What Our Customers Say

After 30k cycling on the Greenway in the driving rain, we came across an Oasis. We received such a warm welcome despite our dripping wet clothes. We had excellent home made scones & desserts. Well worth a visit hail, rain or shine.

This 150 year old cottage is the real deal. We stopped in while biking on the Greenway & made reservations for the family to join us the next day. The owners were so accommodating. Everything is home made that is was like visiting the extended family. The food is simple, classy & authentic. The tea cozys are traditional & brought smiles to all of us. Desserts delighted both young & old.
